Normal
The amount of electronic equipment grows daily, which means there is more demand than ever before on the utility industry. Plus, the complexity and sensitivity of new technologies makes them highly susceptible to spikes, sags, surges, and blackouts. And in today's fast-paced world, performance of your mission-critical equipment is a must ... you simply cannot afford the shutdown of vital systems, or worse, the irretrievable loss of valuable data.

Normal

Power Failure
A total loss of utility power.

Cause:
Can be caused by a number of events. Lightning strikes, downed power lines, grid over-demand, accidents, and natural disasters.

Power Failure

Power Sag
A Short-term low voltage event.

Cause:
Triggered by the startup of large loads, utility switching grids, utility equipment failure, lighting and power service that is too small for the demand. In addition to crashes, sags can damage hardware.

Power Sag

Power Surge
A short-term high voltage event.

Cause:
Can be caused by a lightning strike, and can send line voltages to levels in excess of 6000 volts. A spike almost always results in data loss and / or hardware damage.

Power Surge

Under Voltage
A sustained reduction of line voltage lasting for a few minutes to as much as several days.

Cause:
Can be caused by an intentional reduction of utility voltage done to conserve power during peak demand periods, or by other heavy loads that exceed supply capacity.

Under Voltage

Over Voltage
A sustained increase of line voltage lasting for a few minutes to as much as several days.

Cause:
Can be caused by a rapid reduction of power loads, heavy equipment being turned off, or by utility switching between power grids. The results can potentially damage hardware.

Over Voltage

Line Noise
An unstable, high frequency waveform interlaced the on supply voltage.

Cause:
Can be caused by RFI (radio-frequency interference) or EMI (electro-magnetic interference) generated by transmitters, welding devices, SCR driven printers, and lightning.

Line Noise

Frequency Variation
A change in frequency stability.

Cause:
Resulting from generator or small co-generation sites being loaded or unloaded. Frequency variation can cause erratic operation, data loss, system crashes, and damage equipment.

Frequency Variation

Switching Transient
An instantaneous under-voltage in supply line voltage lasting in the range of nanoseconds.

Cause:

The result of high transient forces produced by sudden peak currents when a motor circuit is opened and closed while a motor is running. Causes intermittent reset, shortened life of relay circuits and damage in sensitive devices.

Switching Transient

Harmonic Distortion Distortion of the normal line waveform generally transmitted by non-linear loads.

Cause: Created by switch mode power supplies, variable speed motor drives, copiers and fax machines are examples of non-linear loads. Can cause communication errors, over-heating and hardware errors.
